Chunky Crochet Blanket Guide: Yarn, Hook Size and a Free Pattern

Everything you need to crochet a chunky blanket this season: the best bulky yarns, which giant hook to use, how much yarn to buy, plus a simple free beginner pattern.

Chunky Crochet Blanket Guide: Yarn, Hook Size and a Free Pattern

There is a reason chunky blankets take over every craft feed the moment temperatures drop: they're the fastest big win in crochet. Fat yarn plus a giant hook means visible progress by the hour, and a finished, gift-worthy throw in a weekend. Here's how to do it right — including the mistakes that make first chunky blankets shed, stretch or cost triple what they should.

Choosing the Yarn (This Decision Is 90% of the Project)

Chunky blankets live or die by yarn choice. Your main options:

Chenille / velvet super bulky — the cloud-soft polyester yarns everyone wants to touch. Gorgeous, washable, affordable. Two warnings: they can worm (loops pushing out of the fabric) if your tension is loose, so go down a hook size and crochet snugly; and always buy enough at once, because dye lots vary visibly.

Wool and wool-blend roving — the huge arm-knitting style yarn. Beautiful and warm, but unspun roving pills and sheds badly with daily use. For a blanket that's used rather than photographed, choose a plied or felted-finish chunky wool instead of loose roving.

Bulky acrylic (#5–#6) — the budget workhorse. Less dramatic than jumbo yarns but durable, machine-washable and available everywhere. Two strands of regular worsted held together also count — a great way to use stash yarn.

For a first chunky blanket, chenille super bulky or bulky acrylic are the safest choices.

Hook Size and How Much to Buy

Match the hook to the yarn band: usually 9–12 mm for super bulky (#6), 15 mm and up for jumbo (#7). Chunky fabric should be soft and drapey — if your test swatch could double as a doormat, go up a size.

Quantity for a standard 127×152 cm (50×60 in) throw: about 1,500–1,800 m of super bulky. Check the meterage per skein on the label and divide — don't trust skein counts between brands, since skein sizes vary wildly. Buy one extra skein; leftover chunky yarn becomes a matching cushion.

Free Pattern: The Weekend Throw

This pattern uses the half double crochet (hdc) — the perfect chunky stitch: faster than single crochet, denser than double crochet.

Materials: ~1,600 m super bulky yarn, 10 mm hook.

  1. Chain 61 (or any number for your desired width — the fabric will be roughly as wide as your starting chain).
  2. Row 1: hdc in the 2nd chain from hook and in every chain across. (60 hdc)
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn. Hdc in each stitch across — and here's the texture trick: work into the third loop of each hdc (the horizontal bar behind the top V). This creates elegant knit-look ridges.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until the blanket is ~150 cm long or you run low on yarn.
  5. Optional border: one round of single crochet around the whole blanket, 3 sc in each corner.
  6. Fasten off and weave in ends thoroughly — chunky ends are slippery, so weave in three directions.

Count your stitches every few rows: with giant yarn, one lost stitch per row turns a rectangle into a triangle embarrassingly fast.

Caring for a Chunky Blanket

Chenille and acrylic: machine wash cold, gentle cycle, dry flat or low tumble. Wool roving: don't machine wash at all — spot clean, or the blanket will felt into a rug. Whatever the fiber, store folded rather than hung; heavy chunky fabric stretches under its own weight.

Level-Up Ideas

Once the basic throw is done: try a chunky granny square version with a 10 mm hook (see our granny square tutorial), alternate two colors every four rows for wide stripes, or make the matching 40×40 cm cushion cover with the leftovers. And if your hands ache after a chunky session, an ergonomic large-size hook is worth every penny — we cover the options in our crochet hooks buying guide.
